Allerton
Allerton- is a neighborhood in the East Bronx which has two subsections, Laconia and Bronxwood. The Italians in Allerton were mostly concentrated in Laconia but at certain points during the 20th century were well distributed throughout the neighborhood. The boundaries of the neighborhood are Ardee Avenue, Boston Road, Gun Hill Road, the IRT Dyre Avenue Line to the east, and Waring Avenue to the south. White Plains Road is the main throughfare of the neighborhood. Today, one can see many homes which sill have yard shrines. Sal and Dom’s Bakery is a perfect example of an Italian American business which remains. The area east of Boston Post Road was predominantly post-war immigrant Italian. The neighborhood is now West Indian. Allerton borders Morris Park, which is still a strong Italian enclave and Bay Chester.
