Brownsville

It’s hard to determine the specific boundaries that comprised the Italian section of Brownsville but the neighborhood was undoubtedly surrounding the Our Lady of Loreto Church, which was the Italian National Parish for the Italian enclave in Brownsville. Brownsville is surrounded by other areas where Italian American neighborhoods existed such as East New York, Bushwick, Bedford Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, and Canarsie. There were many saint processions in Brownsville throughout the early and mid-20th centuries. There are no longer any Italian Americans living within Brownsville nor are there any Italian American businesses remaining. Our Lady of Loreto was demolished in 2017. The church had an Honor Roll dedicated to the boys from the parish who made the ultimate sacrifice in World War 1 and World War 2. The Honor Roll should still be where the church once stood. Brownsville is a residential neighborhood located in eastern Brooklyn in New York City. The neighborhood is generally bordered by Crown Heights to the northwest; Bedford–Stuyvesant and Cypress Hills to the north; East New York to the east; Canarsie to the south; and East Flatbush to the west.
