Little Italy – Pulaski County
Little Italy, located in Perry County near Little Rock, Arkansas, was founded in 1915 by a group of Italian immigrants seeking a better life in a rural and agricultural setting. The community was originally called Alta Villa, meaning high place, and was deeply rooted in their Catholic faith. To respond to their religious needs, Bishop John B. Morris of the Catholic Diocese of Little Rock approved the founding of St. Francis of Assisi Church in 1922, which still serves as the community’s focal point today. The Italians also developed a thriving wine industry during the early days of the town with four bonded wineries by 1920. However, the vineyards had to close due to disease and lack of profit. Today, Little Italy is still home to many Italian-Americans and descendants as well as newcomers who enjoy the small town life. The community life centers around the local churches, including St. Francis of Assisi, where they gather for Mass, events and parties, including the annual Spaghetti Dinner where the Italians still make their sauce from scratch. Despite the decline in the wine industry, the tradition of growing grapes for wine still continues for hobby and enjoyment.
