Independence
Independence has a rich history of Italian immigration. In the 1890s, Sicilian immigrants came to the town to work as strawberry laborers. Within a few years, they saved enough to buy their own farms and expand into other businesses. By 1910, Italians made up the majority of the town’s population. Italian traditions, including those of the Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church, mutual aid societies, and the Knights of Columbus, helped to preserve a sense of community. Notable politicians of Italian descent include Charles Anzalone, Frank Anzalone, and Buster Gazzardo. Independence also celebrates its Italian heritage annually at the Independence Italian Festival (Little Italy Festival). The festival includes a variety of activities, including an honored Grand Marshal, food and music, and a beauty pageant. The festival program book includes family histories and recipes. The Independence Museum collects and displays artifacts relevant to the town’s history and culture. Blaise’s Restaurant is a famed Italian American restaurant there.
