Marrero

In the early 1900s, Marrero had a large Sicilian community, like many others they worked in the sugar and cotton plantations. This enclave, however, has a sinister and terrible story worth recounting. The Axeman of New Orleans was a serial killer who specifically targeted the Italians of the city from 1917 to March 1919. At one point, an Italian was arrested and convicted based off no evidence other than an unreliable identification. This raised questions about the treatment of Italian immigrants in the area.
