Camp Hereford
Camp Hereford was a temporary “enclave” which was a prisoner of war camp for approximately 5,000 captured Italian soldiers from North Africa during WWII. On the site of the camp is the Italian Prisoner of War Chapel, which was built by the prisoners to mark the graves of some POWs which had died during their imprisonment. The chapel was restored in the 1980’s at a ceremony which former prisoners of the camp attended, and it is still standing today.
