Galveston

A large number of Italian immigrants came to Galveston, Texas in the 19th century attracted by economic opportunities. In 1876, they formed the Italian Mutual Benevolent Society to provide assistance to fellow immigrants, including the purchase of a plot of land in Calvary Catholic Cemetery where they built the Italian Vault, a mausoleum serving as a resting place for the deceased until burial could take place. The Italian community in Galveston played a significant role in the city, with many being involved in civic affairs, owning various businesses and influencing the culture and religious practices.
