San Antonio – Piazza Italia
The Piazza Italia enclave within San Antonio, despite its recent naming, has been in existence since the 1890’s and lies in the northwest corner of downtown. Many of the original residents of the neighborhood were immigrants from Spezzano della Sila in Calabria. Though much of it has been destroyed due to highways being built over top of it, there remains the Christopher Columbus Italian Society & Hall, Columbus Park, and San Francesco Di Paola Church. New signage designating the area as “Piazza Italia” was installed, and there are plans to continue to revitalize the area and foster further development of the small Italian community.
